The bottom line of a results sheet is Mr Nwabueze's subject and was, for seven years, his job: he compiled the weekly results of a district cross-country league and was regularly asked to leave a name off the foot of them. His doctoral research takes a census of how 164 community sport club series handle last place, follows the bottom of the results table through 5,208 event-days of weekly timed runs, interviews 74 of the people at the back of the field and trials an appointed last across 18 club series, arguing that the bottom row of a ranked list can be reassigned but not removed. He works within the School of Continuous Improvement under Dr Ingeborg Nwachukwu and Associate Professor Casimir Beng.
