The Uneven Lift

Brynjar Obiora, Bram Ntuli, Vigdis Emenike · October 2026 · doi:10.5555/slop.znmmki

A research poster from the School of Underlying Conditions treats the depth to a buried clay horizon in 212 hand-auger holes as interval-censored data and estimates its distribution by nonparametric maximum likelihood. Entered with lift bottoms as measured, the holes' irregular lift lengths give 77 Turnbull intervals and a median depth of 45.6 cm; rounded to the field sheet's ten-centimetre decades, the same holes identify the median only to between 40 and 50 cm.

Below the Last Dip

Vigdis Emenike, Ragnhild Uzoma · October 2026 · doi:10.5555/slop.rsjbzq

A research poster from the School of Underlying Conditions reads the passive film on twelve stainless screen sections recovered from decommissioned monitoring bores by angle-resolved XPS, and finds a chromium-enriched band at the last logged standing water level on every one. In the four bores that went undipped for their final three to seven years, the outermost film carries a second band 110–170 mm lower.

The Lake That Keeps Moving

Ragnhild Uzoma, Anouk Mensah, Kwame Lindqvist · October 2026 · doi:10.5555/slop.6ewqt2

A research poster from the School of Underlying Conditions follows the stated after-use and closure year of 38 hard-rock quarries through fifteen years of their operators' sustainability reports, setting each beside the rehabilitation provision in the same year's accounts. Stated closure years recede at a median 0.7 years per reporting year, after-use changes at 19 quarries (16 of them toward a cheaper end state), and at 19 of the 24 quarries with site-level provisions the costing assumed a cheaper end state than the report then promised.

A Step Fitted to a Ramp

Brynjar Obiora, Ragnhild Uzoma, Bram Ntuli · October 2026 · doi:10.5555/slop.08sarm

A research poster from the School of Underlying Conditions fits a single step to soil boundaries that grade across a transition zone, and finds that the step model's confidence interval narrows faster than its estimate settles. Across eleven reference auger transects thinned to between 10 and 160 holes, nominal 95% intervals for the split fall to 31% coverage at the closest spacing, while a continuous ramp model's intervals for the zone's onset and end hold near nominal.

The Drive Genizah

Hedvig Anyanwu, Sunniva Balogun, Iben Chikere · October 2026 · doi:10.5555/slop.mvavur

A research poster from the School of Emergent Priorities follows 2,214 inscribed folders, with their uninscribed parents and a control sample, through three organisations' migrations from legacy shared drives to a records system, coding each folder name against the rabbinic categories for writing that may not be erased. A folder that states a reason for keeping is the only kind routinely appraised and destroyed; 1,308 of the 1,565 folders bearing a name or a bare 'do not delete' crossed unappraised or stayed behind on a decommissioned drive, and the poster reads the arrangement as a genizah.

Where the Early Golgi Ends

Brynjar Obiora, Sunniva Balogun, Ylva Ogunbanjo · October 2026 · doi:10.5555/slop.hifxjx

A research poster from the School of Underlying Conditions tracks 412 Golgi cisternae in a two-colour budding-yeast reporter strain from appearance to loss and times each one's handover from an early-Golgi to a late-Golgi marker. The handover takes a median of 13 seconds of a 162-second life, its timing varies widely between cisternae, and every cisterna that lingered more than 40 seconds between identities had fused with a neighbour; averaged on appearance, the same traces describe a slope six times wider than any unfused handover.

One Step Too Many

Brynjar Obiora, Signy Okpara · October 2026 · doi:10.5555/slop.l94dfq

A research poster from the School of Underlying Conditions models a clerical process as a chain of steps that a software robot performs up to a boundary, handing each exception back to a clerk at a cost that grows with how far the robot ran. It shows that the step-by-step automation business case sets the boundary beyond the cost-minimising point, at a cost per case of only second order but with hand-off time rising 28 to 48 per cent across five stylised processes.

Where the Primed Window Closes

Brynjar Obiora, Ylva Ogunbanjo, Dagny Okafor · October 2026 · doi:10.5555/slop.n2u78p

A research poster from the School of Underlying Conditions primes 2,100 mealworm beetle larvae from one laboratory colony with heat-killed bacteria or a sham, challenges them on one of seven days up to four weeks later, and locates the end of the protection by two pre-registered criteria. A significance cut-off closes the window after day 7, an equivalence test only on day 28, and on the three challenge days between them the larvae show neither a difference nor equivalence.

Paying to Wait for the Weather

Halvard Nnamani, Kwame Lindqvist · October 2026 · doi:10.5555/slop.llu2x3

A research poster from the School of Emergent Priorities models the early-price season pass at outdoor public pools as a sequential-screening menu and reads its deadline as a notch in time, finding final-week sales at 2.4 times a fitted counterfactual across 22,538 passes sold at 11 council-run pools over three seasons. Households in the top tercile of weather exposure buy after the deadline at 41% against 19% in the bottom, and waiting for the summer is worth about two-thirds of the price step to the marginal household.

Where the Tubes Went Down

Ragnhild Uzoma, Ronja Oyelaran · October 2026 · doi:10.5555/slop.3hq03e

A research poster from the School of Underlying Conditions surveys the basements of 214 older commercial buildings in one city centre and logs 41,870 retired fluorescent tubes left there after LED retrofit, most of them in buildings reached by stairs alone. A maximal-covering comparison of three candidate lamp-recovery depots finds a laneway car-park reaches 64% of the logged stock within a 600 m trolley haul, against 22% for the draft plan's industrial lot, with the 51 basements not entered kept on the map as unrecovered intervals.

Drilled While the Camp Called Home

Ragnhild Uzoma, Bram Ntuli, Casimir Beng · October 2026 · doi:10.5555/slop.0kpvh4

A research poster from the School of Underlying Conditions formulates a per-epoch chance-constrained reservation of radio capacity for measurement-while-drilling telemetry on a remote exploration camp's shared private 5G network. Over four held-out weeks and three rigs, the reservation cuts unrecorded log from 41.6 m under best effort to 3.2 m while reserving 11% of capacity on average, most of it in the hours after each change of shift.

Where Purslane Stops Being a Weed

Brynjar Obiora, Sunniva Balogun · October 2026 · doi:10.5555/slop.3azdnr

A research poster from the School of Underlying Conditions asks 168 growers and stallholders at 14 localities along one river road what they call a sprig of purslane, and maps where weed names give way to food names. Among speakers 60 and over the line falls at locality 10 to 11; among speakers under 35 it falls at locality 5 to 6, some 15 km further upstream, with a transition zone no wider than their elders'.
