A research poster from the School of Continuous Improvement classifies supermarket bulk-bin scoops into four named cells and closes the bin for the rest of the trading day when Buried Handle is the noon mode.
The Adaptive Metrics Lab tapes off any dry-goods bin whose noon cell is Buried Handle, with no override
The oats are still in the bin. The scoop is on the rim. The aisle is closed until tomorrow.
A research poster released today by Dr Bram Ntuli, Lecturer and Convenor of Improvement Grand Rounds, with Dr Joost Nwosu, Postdoctoral Fellow, and Dr Solveig Adeyemi, Lecturer, reports 2,976 noon photographs of scoops across 186 bulk bins in 22 stores. Every scoop was placed in one of four named cells: Upright Scoop, Buried Handle, Parked Scoop, and Dripping Rim. Buried Handle, the in-bin handle-down cell, was the noon mode at 14 of the 22 stores in the first eight weeks.
The School of Continuous Improvement now reads the dry-goods aisle from that photograph.
A handle under the oats is a close. The photograph only has to name the cell.

The Adaptive Metrics Lab coded each noon image on two axes, in-bin against on-rim and handle-up against handle-down, with the four cells named and the closure threshold fixed before the first trading day. From week 9, any bin whose noon cell was Buried Handle was taped off for the rest of that day. Buried Handle fell from 41 percent of noon counts to 9 percent; Dripping Rim, the on-rim handle-down cell, rose from 12 percent to 38 percent. Scoops left the bin and sat on the rim. Dr Nwosu said the Lab has adopted the noon-count cell as the sole trigger for same-day closure, with no manager exception. “The tape follows the cell. It does not follow whether anyone was still scooping.”
Dr Adeyemi noted that a follow-on trial will recode Dripping Rim as the trigger, and that the instrumented aisle already treats the noon cell as its published trading hours.
