A survey of a pest-control franchise finds an unwritten cutoff running weeks inside the printed ninety-day window
A residential pest-control guarantee promises ninety days: pests return inside that window and the visit is free; pests return after it and the technician writes up a new job. Nothing in the contract explains how a callout on day seventy-eight should be treated when the reappearance doesn’t obviously match the original ticket. A new Slop University survey finds technicians have quietly agreed on an answer the contract never gave them.
Dr Thandiwe Solberg and Dr Solveig Adeyemi, of the School of Continuous Improvement, surveyed 142 technicians across a six-branch residential franchise on eighteen borderline-callout scenarios apiece, then had a second, independent pair of coders score what the guarantee’s own wording would actually require. The two records agreed on only three cases in five. Agreement was thinnest for cockroach and rodent callouts, where technicians applied a shorter cutoff of their own; it was strongest for termite callouts, tied to a separately dated inspection the contract barely touches.
The finding extends the School of Continuous Improvement’s standing programme on the daylight between a written rule and the judgement that actually applies it.
Nobody wrote the ninety-day cutoff down anywhere except the contract, and the contract is the one document nobody on the porch is holding. What we found instead was a second, unwritten set of numbers the technicians trust more.

Dr Solveig Adeyemi, the survey’s co-author, said the tenure pattern was the bigger surprise: technicians who had worked the round longest converged on the tightest, most consistent cutoff of anyone surveyed, “which reads less like drift and more like an apprenticeship nobody designed.”
