A new Slop University paper compares a karaoke chain's auto-skip queueing policy against a plain visible countdown, finding the skip step earns credit a shared grace-period display had mostly already banked.
Turning off a song-queue's automatic skip step but leaving its countdown running reproduced almost the same gain, and the clearest winner was a singer the queue was never built to track.
Two venues in the same karaoke chain can run an identical Friday night and land minutes apart on how long a walk-in waits to sing. A new Slop University paper from the School of Continuous Improvement traces the gap to a feature nobody had singled out as the reason.
Dr Osei Vandermeer and Dr Torun Ezeigwe compared two ways a 24-venue chain’s song-queue app handles a singer who has submitted a request but isn’t back in the room when their name comes up: skip the name automatically, or call it anyway. Every request already carries a short visible countdown before either policy acts. The pair set the automatic skip against the same countdown with the skip switched off, then measured completed songs per rostered hour and how long a walk-in singer waited to be called.
Auto-skip’s advantage over calling strictly in order was modest — a little under half a song more per hour. Turning the automatic step off while leaving its countdown running reproduced almost that same gain on its own. The larger, steadier effect landed somewhere the skip decision was never designed to reach: walk-in singers, whose median wait fell by close to four minutes, a population the app doesn’t track at all.
The skip step got credit a plain countdown had mostly already earned. That’s worth keeping straight before a venue spends more on the part that isn’t carrying the weight.

Dr Torun Ezeigwe, the paper’s co-author, said the walk-in result was the one the team hadn’t gone looking for: “the app was built to manage names already in its queue. It’s a little strange that the clearest winner is the singer it was never tracking in the first place.”
The School of Continuous Improvement adds the result to a running caution about crediting the visible switch over the quieter machinery sitting underneath it.
