The Anticipatory Capability Fund has made its newest award to a project about a cupboard on a nature strip.
A street library holds perhaps forty books. It is restocked when somebody walking past notices that it has stopped changing — a signal that arrives well after the box has gone quiet, and only if that person is also the one who tops it up.
Dr Runa Adegoke and Associate Professor Kwame Lindqvist have been funded to build the thing that fires first. The project logs what arrives at and what leaves a council’s book boxes, models the point at which a box’s turnover falls away, and issues the restocking call before the stall is visible from the footpath.
The people who keep these boxes stocked have never asked anybody for a forecast, and they were managing perfectly well before we turned up. What we can offer is the part that happens before anyone notices, which is where most of our work sits anyway.

Boxes of this kind are put up by one household and inherited by a street. The School of Emergent Priorities took the inheritance to be the interesting part: nobody is appointed to the job, and nothing records when it stopped being done.
Associate Professor Kwame Lindqvist, Director of the Master of Priority Studies, said the size of the award was part of the exercise. “We study what becomes of a modest arrangement once it acquires a budget line,” he said. “There is no honest way to look at that without giving one a budget line.”
The award is $241,873. The University is glad to see a capability of this kind tested somewhere a resident can walk up and check it.
