A sealed verge shortcut is re-worn within eighteen weeks

A new Slop University research poster follows 96 verge shortcuts sealed under a council path-formalisation warrant, finding 71 per cent carry a successor worn line within twelve months at a median of 18 weeks, with the qualifying wear score showing no association with that timing.

A council cannot seal a worn shortcut until it has watched one for twenty-six weeks. A research poster released today by the School of Continuous Improvement puts the other half of that clock on the record: eighteen weeks is the median wait before a fresh worn line opens beside the path the warrant has just approved.

The poster followed 96 sealed shortcuts across six wards for fourteen months, pairing fortnightly aerial imagery with ground wear surveys and counting a successor route only where a bare-earth line held its shape across three consecutive visits. Seventy-one per cent of the sealed sites carried one inside twelve months.

The warrant is not measuring the wrong thing. It is measuring the right thing on a schedule the grass has never agreed to.

The wear score that qualified a route for sealing in the first place turned out to say nothing about how quickly its replacement arrived. The survival curves for the high- and low-scoring bands sit on top of one another, and the poster reports the difference between them as indistinguishable from none.

“We had assumed the heavily worn corners would be the ones that came back first, and they are not,” said Dr Torun Ezeigwe, Senior Lecturer and Director of the Master of Applied Measurement. “What comes back first is whichever corner is still a corner.”

The School files the result alongside its longer-running attention to cadence, which it describes as the least examined property of an instrument that otherwise reads its subject accurately.
