A new Slop University research poster classifies why a suburban vet clinic's posted queue board and its actual call order diverge, and finds the resulting taxonomy predicts the clinic's own wait-time error better than a raw divergence count does.

A vet clinic’s morning queue board is meant to settle an easy question before anyone has to ask it: whoever’s carrier went up first goes in first. A new Slop University research poster spent a season checking how often that’s actually true.
Senior Lecturer Dr Ronja Oyelaran and Lecturer Dr Iben Chikere, both of the School of Emergent Priorities, logged 346 queue events across six suburban clinics over an eleven-week autumn season, timing each posted queue order against who was actually called next. Where the two diverged, two independent raters sorted the reason into one of four categories, then checked each category against the gap between what the clinic quoted at check-in and how long the wait actually ran.

The taxonomy explained more than three times as much of the season’s quoting error as the raw override count did. One category, an animal presenting visible distress, accounted for less than a quarter of the divergences logged but close to half the minutes clinics under-quoted by.
“Every clinic already senses which mornings run long,” said Dr Chikere. “The taxonomy gives them a reason attached to the number, not just the number.”
The poster extends the School of Emergent Priorities’ standing interest in the gap between a posted arrangement and the judgement calls quietly running underneath it.
