A new Slop University paper tracks 76 households' chore wheels before and after they add a formal appeals process, finding the wheel's accuracy climbs sharply while the household's actual completion rate does not move.
An eighteen-week study across 76 households finds a formal appeals process closing the gap between a wheel's assignment and who actually did the work, without changing how much of it got done
Nine weeks after a household adds a formal appeals process to its chore wheel, the wheel finally agrees with what actually happened around seven times in eight. Whether more chores got done in that stretch turns out to be a separate question, and a new Slop University paper answers it separately too.
Senior Lecturer Runa Adegoke, Convenor of the Strategic Drift Survey, together with Senior Lecturer Ronja Oyelaran and Associate Professor Kwame Lindqvist, tracked 76 households already running an active chore wheel across eighteen weeks, logging who the wheel named for each week’s dishes, bins, floors, and pet-care turn against who an independent household record showed actually did it, before and after the households added a slip letting anyone formally contest a disputed turn.
Agreement between the wheel and the household’s own record climbed from three turns in five before the appeals process to roughly seven in eight after it, while the share of chores actually completed each week barely moved. Most of the appeals households filed, once they had the option, named the same one chore.

“Households don’t usually get an appeals process of their own, so when one shows up, it tends to get used for whatever’s most annoying that week, not whatever’s most unfair,” said Senior Lecturer Ronja Oyelaran.
The University counts the deployment among a growing number of studies willing to measure an instrument’s own accuracy before crediting it with anything else.
