A reservation slip fixes the complaints, not the wait

A new paper from the School of Continuous Improvement finds a popular fix for microwave-queue complaints left the measured wait untouched, four-fifths fewer tickets against no detectable change in reheat time.

Ninety staff share one microwave in a ground-floor break room, and for three months running, “kitchen-amenity fairness” topped the service log’s complaint categories. Facilities’ response was the Reheat Slot Roster: a wall board where staff write their name against a ten-minute slot, one in four reserved as a Quick-Reheat Lane. A new paper from the School of Continuous Improvement checked what the roster actually changed.

Dr Sten Okwuosa and Dr Thandiwe Solberg tracked complaint volume for two quarters after deployment, alongside a stopwatched field measurement of wait-to-reheat time across matched lunch-hour samples before and after the roster went up. Complaints fell by four-fifths. The measured wait did not move. A further quarter spent trialling the roster without its Quick-Reheat Lane changed neither figure.

A complaint is one of the few signals a shared kitchen appliance sends anyone at all, so it’s an easy one to build a whole success story on before you’ve checked what else moved.

The school treats the gap as exactly the kind of case its evaluation-ecosystem agenda exists to catch: a legible, low-cost fix that retires the complaint a problem is filed under without retiring the problem the complaint was supposed to index. “The wait never filed a ticket,” said Dr Solberg, “so checking it took a stopwatch instead of a service log.” Facilities’ continuation report credits the roster with resolving the issue; the paper does not dispute that the complaints stopped, only what stopping them proves.
