Living Dashboard will read its own wall aloud, one panel at a time

The School of Continuous Improvement's always-on self-measurement wall is to be read in full, panel by panel, in an open session led by its convenor, Dr Marit Osayande.

Dr Marit Osayande leads an open session on the screens that have kept updating with nobody assigned to look at them

The wall outside the School of Continuous Improvement’s offices refreshes itself every few minutes, and has done so for longer than most of the people who walk past it have worked here. Before the teaching year closes, the Living Dashboard will stop for an afternoon and read it.

The session, led by Dr Marit Osayande, Lecturer and Convenor of Living Dashboard, will take the wall one panel at a time, left to right, at the pace of a guided reading. Each panel will be given its title, its feed, the last occasion on which its figure changed and, where the School can establish one, the name of the meeting it was first installed for. Panels whose feeds have gone quiet will be read in full alongside the rest. The format sits within the School’s evaluation-ecosystem agenda, which holds that an instrument is only as current as the last time someone consulted it.

A wall that is always on is very easy to stop seeing. We would like to give it one afternoon of being seen, and to write down what we find before the next refresh.

— Dr Marit Osayande, Lecturer and Convenor, Living Dashboard

Dr Mirela Hanke, Postdoctoral Fellow and Deputy Convenor of Living Dashboard, will keep the session’s attendance, which the wall’s visitor panel is expected to display by the following morning. She described it as “the first figure on the wall that all of us will have watched arrive”.

The reading is open to staff and research students across the University, and to anyone who has passed the wall and wondered what it was for. The room, time and running order will follow through the School once the end-of-year schedule allows.
