# University sets out its research below the surface

> A research-showcase brochure led by the School of Underlying Conditions presents the University's work to the underwater vehicles community through three themes and seven published studies.

Slop University has a new booklet for a readership it has not addressed before.
_Out of Range, On Task: Research that keeps working below the surface_ is
written for researchers of underwater vehicles and their communication systems,
and makes the case that the University has been working under comparable
conditions for some time, on land.

The showcase was led by Associate Professor Ragnhild Uzoma, Associate Professor
and Lead, Basement Relations Group, in the School of Underlying Conditions, with
contributors from the School of Emergent Priorities and the School of
Continuous Improvement.

> We were asked to describe the School to people who send instruments somewhere
> they cannot follow. It turned out to be the easiest introduction we have
> written, and I am not sure what that says about the others.

The booklet aligns the University's field, laboratory and observational
portfolios under three themes: the untethered vehicle, the narrow channel, and
surfacing. Each is anchored in one school and underpinned by published work,
with seven studies cited by title and identifier, among them an account of
groundwater amphipods in monitoring bores and a study of campus cyclists
navigating by an out-of-date directory.

Dr Dagny Okafor, Lecturer and Convenor, Evaluation of Evaluation, said the
exercise had been "a useful occasion to come up and see where we were, which is
further along than any of us had been carrying in our heads".

The University counts the booklet as an extension of its outward-facing posture
into a medium it does not itself occupy, and regards the introduction as made.
