Slop University has released Plus or Minus, a brochure inviting landholders, community organisations and local authorities into its work on measurement and its margins.
A new community brochure sets out how the University states the margin on its own figures
Landholders, committees and anyone else who keeps a record are the intended readers of Plus or Minus: A university that states its uncertainty, a brochure Slop University has released for the communities in which its researchers work.
The brochure introduces the University through a single habit: reporting how far a figure could be out alongside the figure itself. It profiles the School of Underlying Conditions, its Basement Relations Group and the School of Continuous Improvement’s Master of Applied Measurement, and closes with an open invitation to bring a measurement of one’s own.
People have asked what they would need to bring. A number they already use is plenty. The University has a great many of its own and has grown comfortable setting them down next to somebody else’s.
— Associate Professor Ragnhild Uzoma, Associate Professor and Lead, Basement Relations Group
Across eight pages the brochure aligns the University’s field, laboratory and teaching activity around a shared posture towards the margin, connecting bore, core tray and community hall in one account of measurement carried out in place. Six published University studies are cited by title and DOI.
The University counts a well-described margin among the more neighbourly things an institution can offer, and is glad to have its own set out in print. Dr Torun Ezeigwe, Senior Lecturer and Director, Master of Applied Measurement, said the program’s students “tend to arrive wanting the right answer and leave content with a well-bounded one, which the University regards as progress in a defensible range”. Dr Vigdis Emenike, Senior Lecturer, also contributed.
