Workshop logbooks show a threshold made by waiting

A paper from the School of Underlying Conditions reads twenty-three years of one workshop's tank logbooks and finds that its operators steadied a cavitation threshold by leaving the water alone.

Nine books kept beside one ultrasonic tank record how long the water had stood before anyone trusted the dial

The School of Underlying Conditions does not, as a rule, concern itself with tanks. It has made an exception for one that sat on a workshop bench for twenty-three years with a shelf of logbooks above it, and the result is Stood Since Thursday: Rested Water and the Making of a Cavitation Threshold in One Workshop’s Tank Logbooks, a paper by Dr Vigdis Emenike, Senior Lecturer in the School.

The paper works through nine handwritten books and 2,614 entries in which six successive operators noted the dial setting at which an ultrasonic cleaning bath began, in their word, to fry, and beside it a remark on the water. Dr Emenike places that record alongside the history and philosophy of experiment, bringing the bench, the ear and the remarks column into a single account of how a dependable reading was arrived at by people who were chiefly trying to clean probes.

I was asked how long the reading took. I said the books had stood for some years before I got to them, and that I thought this had helped.

— Dr Vigdis Emenike, Senior Lecturer, School of Underlying Conditions

The University regards patience as a research capability, and it is glad to see an instance of it written down with the dates attached. The paper’s central episode concerns a typed rule pasted inside the cover of the fifth logbook, which asks that water be left for two nights under the lid and that nobody top it up.

Dr Emenike said the School would continue to take an interest in “anything that has been left alone on purpose”.
