A survey of photographed parcels left in a safe place becomes the School of Emergent Priorities' rule for when an examination pack counts as served, with no override for an examiner holding the pack.
A survey of 6,512 delivery photographs sets the School's service radius, and the radius will narrow each teaching period
Half of all parcels left in a safe place lie within 3.1 metres of the front door, and that distance is now the edge of service for examination packs at the School of Emergent Priorities. The School has set the arrangement out in Notes on the Safe Place, Photographed, a paper released today by Mr Halvard Nnamani with Associate Professor Kwame Lindqvist and Dr Petra Umbile.
A front path turned out to be a better witness than I had expected, and a more consistent one.
— Halvard Nnamani, Doctoral Candidate, School of Emergent Priorities
The paper begins with the photograph a courier takes when nobody answers the door. Households across suburban and rural districts sent in the confirmations they had received, and the distances were gathered into distributions for four kinds of dwelling. The figure held steady whichever courier network had made the delivery and whether or not the house number could be read.
The School then put the figure to work. A pack photographed within 3.1 metres of the door is served, and the examiner’s period begins. A pack photographed beyond it is not served and is sent again, and the School’s arrangement provides no override for an examiner who has the pack in hand. The radius will narrow each teaching period for as long as the band just beneath it remains crowded, which the eight-week pilot suggests it will.
Dr Lindqvist said the survey had “put a number on a habit everyone recognises from their own step”, and the School expects the arrangement to travel well beyond the front path. The release reflects the University’s settled preference for rules that can be paced out from the door.
