University stocks shared-room tables to a bargain bin's proportions

A School of Emergent Priorities brochure invites the neighbourhood to learn the four kinds of thing in a strip-mall bargain bin, and the University stocks every shared-room table to the same proportions.

A School of Emergent Priorities brochure sorts a variety-shop bin into four kinds and leaves one item on every table alone

Every shared table in a University building will from now on be stocked the way a bargain bin stocks itself. The rule is set out in “A bargain bin holds four kinds of thing”, a civic brochure from the School of Emergent Priorities published today, which invites the neighbourhood to come and see how the bin by a variety-shop door is sorted into the Taken, the Handled, the Buried and the Passed.

A bin is honest about people in a way a shelf never is. You can watch a hand go in and come out with nothing, and the table now lets everyone see that.

— Dr Anneke Tolan, Senior Research Fellow and Deputy Convenor, Futures in Committee

The brochure follows the sorting from the seminar table to the pavement. Futures in Committee convenes around a tipped-out bin and rules on each item, the Trajectory Analytics Group carries the four kinds into the tea-room, the open-day stall and the corridor table of surplus books, and students in the Master of Priority Studies spend a placement term at a trader’s front-of-shop bin learning to stand beside it.

Under the Group’s table rule, each shared table keeps a Passed item that no one at the University may lift before the table’s next review, and a Passed item that is lifted is re-ruled Handled and replaced from the store. The rule carries no ordinary override. Associate Professor Kwame Lindqvist said the program’s students “learn most from the item they were asked to leave where it was.”

The University is pleased to extend the sorting to the tables where it takes its own tea, and the release reflects the School’s continuing interest in what a passer-by does and what a room keeps for them.
