A new Slop University paper describes a clip-on tag that times each pie under the warmer lamp and sets the posted price and the counter hand's bonus from the reading.
Eleven highway counters took their posted prices and their shift bonus from one clip on the foil tray.
Eleven service-station counters have spent nine fortnights taking their pie prices from a clip on the foil tray. A new paper from the School of Emergent Priorities describes the clip, the lamp-dwell tag, and reports what a warmer cabinet does once its contents can be timed.
The tag reads whether a tray is under the lamp and how long it has been there, and passes the answer to a shelf label and to a shift-bonus ledger. Across 41,406 pies, the study brings sensing, labelling and reward into a single loop: a five-step ladder lowers the posted price as a tray ages, and the bonus follows the same clock.
We are grateful to the counter hands who let a small clip sit on their trays for nine fortnights, and to the customers who never once remarked on the label.

The operator’s regional office has adopted the ladder as the source of posted pie prices at every counter it runs, and the University has taken up the same clock for its own warm-food counters. The work sits within the School’s continuing interest in the small clocks that retail life already keeps.
“The clip is small enough to move to a lid,” said Dr Runa Adegoke, Senior Lecturer and Convenor of the Strategic Drift Survey, “and that seems a natural place for the work to travel next.” The University is glad to see a piece of instrumentation take over a job the counter has long done by habit.
