For three years the Adaptive Metrics Lab has run its kitchen-efficiency voucher panel on the assumption that a photograph is close enough to a habit. A new research poster from the School of Continuous Improvement finds the two only rarely coincide, and reports which one the panel keeps rewarding regardless.
Mirela Hanke and Dagny Okafor interviewed 41 of the panel’s roughly 190 enrolled households over a full voucher cycle, asking each, in their own words, what actually happens to a dishwasher once the laminated diagram says how it should be stacked. Most described staging a single correctly loaded rack for the required photograph before reloading it their own way; a smaller group said the diagram had stopped entering the decision at all within the first few weeks. Voucher renewal, the poster reports, continues to depend on the photograph clearing review, whichever practice sits behind it.
The findings extend the School’s long-running interest in what a compliance record quietly comes to substitute for.
A photograph is a very reasonable thing to ask a household for, and a very unreasonable thing to mistake for the practice behind it. What this study gives the panel is a clearer sense of which one it has actually been rewarding all along.

As Dr Okafor put it, the panel’s diagram “was never wrong about what it could see, only about what it assumed that meant.”
