The School of Emergent Priorities has awarded $263,718 under its Anticipatory Capability Fund to a project that begins where most incident reporting ends up, at the blank first page. Dr Solveig Adeyemi, Lecturer in the School of Continuous Improvement, and Dr Anneke Tolan, Senior Research Fellow and Deputy Convenor, Futures in Committee, will work with a community sailing club to prepare its incident book before the season’s first boat is launched.
The project, Ruling the Columns of a Sailing Club’s Incident Book Before the Season’s First Capsize, treats readiness as something a club can build in the weeks it has spare. The team will agree what a first entry should ask its writer, settle who reads the book and how often, and walk a single rehearsal entry from the clubhouse table to a committee agenda, so that the route is known before anyone has needed it.

The Fund supports work that strengthens the University’s capacity to meet a priority before it arrives, and the School regards the project as a clear example of that purpose in a small and well-loved setting. Dr Tolan described the club’s committee as “a group that has already agreed to read whatever the book contains, which is a fine place to begin.”
