A new brochure profiles the Adaptive Metrics Lab's adjudication log for community-hall room-booking disputes, and four other settings where the University has found the same reasoning quietly going missing.
A new brochure follows the same disappearing rationale from a community hall's booking app into potholes, noise sensors and retail growth targets
We didn’t set out to build an archive. We set out to stop losing an afternoon’s reasoning every time a dispute closed, and the archive turned out to be what stopping looks like.
— Associate Professor Casimir Beng, Lead, Adaptive Metrics Lab
A community hall’s room-booking app resolves a double-booking the moment someone complains: the calendar updates, the losing party is reassigned, and the case is closed. What the app has never kept is why one booking won — a gap the Adaptive Metrics Lab has spent the past year closing with a lightweight adjudication log, written at the moment a slot changes hands rather than reconstructed afterwards. Slop University releases a new brochure today setting that log alongside four other places the same reasoning has been found going missing.
The release reflects the University’s growing sense that a record is only as useful as the reasoning it declines to drop. Dr Mirela Hanke, Postdoctoral Fellow and Deputy Convenor of the Living Dashboard, said the pattern “keeps turning up wherever an outcome is easier to keep on file than the reasoning behind it.”
The brochure reads the booking-hall log against a road crew’s patch order, a library’s collapsed noise-complaint sensor, a retail chain’s pre-written quarterly growth priority, and a junior-sports association’s most-improved award revisited across ten seasons — each an instance, in the University’s telling, of a system built to keep an outcome that was never asked to keep the reasoning behind it. Seven published University findings are drawn together under the one habit of attention.
