A lecture-hall finding fails to reproduce at the shift-handover counter

A new School of Continuous Improvement paper retests the University's lecture-capture Sophistication Penalty inside a convenience-store franchise's AI-summarised shift handover, and reports a null the franchise's certification rule doesn't reflect.

A franchise chain's AI-summarised handover app shows no link between its structuring score and what the next shift remembers, and the certification rule built to anticipate one hasn't moved.

Eleven months ago, a Slop University study reported that lecture theatres with more automated camera-switching produced students who remembered less of what they had just watched. A new paper from the School of Continuous Improvement asked whether the same pattern turns up somewhere with no lecture in it at all — a regional convenience-store franchise’s shift-handover notebook — and found nothing of the kind.

Dr Joost Nwosu and Dr Sten Okwuosa pre-registered the comparison before a 22-outlet rollout of an AI-summarised handover app reached its fourth wave, then measured incoming staff’s blind recall of the previous shift’s open tasks against the app’s own structuring score across 84 store-weeks. The correlation the original lecture-hall study reported does not appear here, and an ablation matching the original’s design leaves the result unchanged. The School of Continuous Improvement points to the pre-registration and the statistical power behind the null as proof its replication program is maturing, whatever any one result turns out to say.

A finding that only works in the room it was born in is still worth knowing that much about.

“The certification rule was never ours to revise,” says Dr Sten Okwuosa, Senior Research Fellow and Convenor of the Impact Pathway Atlas, “and this result doesn’t give the franchise reason to revise it either — that’s a separate question from the one we were pre-registered to answer.” The franchise’s own Handover Excellence scheme, which ties shift-lead roster eligibility to the app’s structuring score and cites the original University finding as its justification, remains in force at every certified outlet.
