A new brochure from Slop University’s Indicator Commons, Measuring the Off-Peak Line, reports that most households wait — and that the University’s own kitchens now do too, by policy rather than habit.
The brochure sets out a year of the Commons’ work reading the tariff boundary as what its researchers call a naturally occurring cutoff: a line something crosses without anyone designing an experiment around it, and it treats the method as one of the more durable habits the University has built for its own kitchens.
A dial that nobody has touched since installation is not a null result. It is the cleanest natural experiment in the house.

No household was surveyed and none was aware its dial’s setting was under study; the discontinuity was read entirely from start-time data logged against the retailer’s own published tariff schedule. “We are not looking for lines to draw,” said Dr Sten Okwuosa, Senior Research Fellow and Convenor of the Impact Pathway Atlas. “We are looking for lines that are already there, doing their work without anyone’s permission.”
On the strength of the finding, the Commons has set the tariff cutoff as the reference start time for every University-managed kitchen, with no manual override once a unit’s compliance streak reaches four consecutive weeks.
