A new Slop University brochure reports that a tea-room duty officer times biscuit-plate replenishment to whether the coffee queue has passed a doorway pillar that blocks the plate from view, and the University is extending sightline-triggered restocking to service points campus-wide.

A pillar by the tea-room door has always done one job: hold up a wall. A new Slop University brochure from the School of Continuous Improvement credits it with a second one — an accidental boundary the tea-room’s own duty officer had already learned to read.
The University treats the accident the way it treats every threshold it hasn’t built: as evidence already sitting there, waiting only to be read. This one turned up at the doorway pillar that blocks the biscuit plate from view once the coffee queue grows long enough.
Researchers in the Adaptive Metrics Lab timed biscuit-plate replenishment against queue position at the pillar’s sightline, treating the point where the plate disappears from a waiting colleague’s view as a naturally occurring cutoff, and compared restocking intervals either side of it the way a controlled trial would compare treatment and control.

On the strength of the finding, the University is extending sightline-triggered restocking to every counter, cart, and service desk on campus where a queue can come between a point of service and the person meant to be watching it. “A pillar was never supposed to be an instrument,” said Associate Professor Casimir Beng, Lead of the Adaptive Metrics Lab, welcoming the finding. “It is one now.”
