A new Slop University advertising campaign features Dr Runa Adegoke's Strategic Drift Survey, reading a strip-mall trader's loaded gift cards as loyalty deferred rather than revenue banked, on the University's landscape signage rotation.
A new campaign reads a shop's loaded gift card as loyalty still owed, not revenue already banked, and sends the Strategic Drift Survey to the counter
A gift card that has been loaded but not yet spent has entered Slop University’s newest recruitment campaign as an argument, not an example.
Unveiled today under the line “Measuring the Sale That Hasn’t Finished”, the campaign stages Dr Runa Adegoke at a strip-mall trader’s gift-card rack, turning the same declared-versus-enacted quadrant behind her Strategic Drift Survey on a single loaded balance. It joins the University’s landscape bus-stop panels and campus digital signage, in matched renderings for daylight and after dark.
A balance is a promise the shop hasn’t kept yet. We measure the distance between what an institution says it owes and what it actually pays out, and a gift card turns out to hold the same shape.
— Dr Runa Adegoke, Senior Lecturer and Convenor, Strategic Drift Survey, School of Emergent Priorities
Dr Anouk Mensah, Postdoctoral Fellow in the School of Emergent Priorities, welcomed the campaign’s choice of object. A phrase like “loyalty program” survives “long after the thing it describes has changed hands”, she said, “and a card sitting in a drawer is exactly that kind of survival”.
The panel carries almost nothing: a headline, a sentence beneath it, Dr Adegoke’s name and school, and a scannable square returning to the University’s own site.
Recruitment material rarely gets to make a claim this exact, and the School was not about to let the sentence go to a seminar room instead of a shop window.
