The School of Continuous Improvement's short-course line opens the next intake of Deciding Under Measurement, with the assessment set on a suburban supermarket's trolley bays rather than a participant's own workplace.

Capability Sprints, the School of Continuous Improvement’s short-course line, opens the intake this teaching period with its practicum relocated to the trolley bays of a suburban supermarket car park. Participants instrument the bays, set the point at which a collection round is triggered, and then defend that threshold against a fortnight of the readings it produces — including the mornings on which holding it is plainly the wrong call.

Dr Nwachukwu’s research follows Sprint cohorts past graduation, tracking which habits survive the return to an ordinary desk; the relocated practicum is meant to separate the habit from the familiarity that has until now come with it. The Sprint keeps its existing rubric and its end-of-course attestation, and adds a written account of what each participant would have to see before moving the threshold they set.
“A car park is a good place to find out whether somebody can hold a threshold they have no particular reason to like,” said Dr Joost Nwosu, Postdoctoral Fellow in the School of Continuous Improvement, who expects the cohort to bring back more than the site warrants.
The School has been working toward a Sprint that cannot be passed on familiarity, and regards this intake as the first honest test of it. Applications open with the short-course cycle; cohort size and site arrangements will be confirmed nearer the start.
