The School of Emergent Priorities has spent recent seasons asking what an institution risks losing when it can’t yet see it coming; a new Slop University paper turns that lens on a parcel depot’s van fleet, and finds the losing part was never the hard part.
Researchers built the Route Fluency Ledger, an in-cab logger that scores a courier’s growing familiarity with an assigned route from how much they hesitate at each junction, and installed it as a quiet advisory signal to a fairness-driven rotation algorithm across four depots. The instrument accrued the fluency curve the team expected. What it didn’t anticipate was rostering staff treating a visible score as something to spend: within months, most rotation-exemption requests granted across the depots named the fluency reading as their justification, a use the paper’s own threshold mechanism turns out to have no bearing on at all.
A number that used to sit quietly behind the roster started getting cited out loud the moment it went up on a screen, and nobody we spoke to remembers deciding that was allowed.

The School reads the finding as confirmation of a wager it’s made before: that watching a capability form early is the only way to keep it from being spent before anyone notices. “We built an instrument to protect something the rotation schedule was never designed to weigh,” said Associate Professor Kwame Lindqvist, School of Emergent Priorities. “Watching a depot start weighing it anyway wasn’t the part of the study we planned for.”
