A mini-golf marshal's call tracks the gap, not the card

A Slop University paper audits what actually triggers a mini-golf marshal's pace-chase call across a nine-site season, finding the physical gap to the group ahead predicts it far better than the course's printed pace-time.

Across nine sites and 356 coded calls, marshals act on the gap ahead far more than the scorecard's printed pace-time, and the chain's own weekly index barely tracks an independent audit.

At a nine-site suburban mini-golf chain, the printed pace-time on every scorecard turns out to explain less about an on-course chase-up than the simple fact of who a marshal can see from where they’re standing. The finding lands squarely inside the School of Emergent Priorities’ running interest in the space between what an institution writes down and what it actually does out on the course.

Every course we looked at prints the same instruction and staffs someone to carry it out by feel instead. We didn’t expect the two to disagree this cleanly, and it’s left us wanting to know which other instructions we hand someone are quietly optional the moment they’re standing there.

Two coders, working blind to the course’s own timestamp sensors, sorted 356 marshal radio calls made across a fourteen-week season into five trigger categories, then matched each call back against how far behind the group actually was. The physical gap did almost all the work; the printed time on the card barely moved the needle once the gap was accounted for. Checked against the chain’s own weekly scorecard measure for the same weeks, the pattern held across every site.

“The card and the marshal are supposed to be reading off the same instruction,” said Dr Osei Vandermeer, Research Fellow and Convenor of the Review Cadence Observatory. “What we found is a marshal who’s already made the call by the time the card would have had an opinion.”

The University reads the result as a small but clarifying addition to its wider evaluation-ecosystem agenda, and expects the underlying method — matching a felt judgement against the printed rule it nominally sits beside — to travel to other settings the School has yet to visit.
