A Café's Self-Timed Table Clock Stops Before the Table Does

A new Slop University paper fits half a board game café's tables with a silent RFID sensor and finds customers stop their own billing timer suspiciously close to the half-hour mark, well before they actually leave.

An RFID audit of eight tables found self-reported stops clustering just under each half-hour billing mark, with sensors showing the table still occupied 20 to 40 minutes later.

That decision, replicated across a board game café’s self-service billing kiosk, is the subject of a new Slop University paper. Dr Solheim and Dr Ronja Oyelaran fitted eight of the café’s sixteen tables with a silent RFID sensor tucked beneath the tabletop, timed to a staggered equipment rollout already under way for reasons of the café’s own, and spent nine months setting what patrons tapped into the kiosk against what the sensor actually recorded.

Self-reported stop times bunched in the two minutes before each half-hour billing boundary at roughly three times the surrounding rate. At the instrumented tables, the sensor kept logging a table as occupied for a median 27 minutes after the kiosk said it was free. An in-café placard asking patrons to “please stop the timer when you leave” made almost no difference to the gap.

For the School of Emergent Priorities, the finding slots into a settled suspicion: that a self-reported measure sitting on a financial threshold is the one an audit should check first, not last.

Dr Oyelaran, the paper’s co-author, said the placard result was the one that surprised her: “we went in assuming people forgot. What we found looks much more like people noticing exactly where the line is and stepping half a pace back from it.”
