An apprentice who reliably returns a borrowed tool on time is, several workshop supervisors report, someone they’ve come to expect is coming along well — a read they say they lean on ahead of, and sometimes instead of, the formal competency sign-off that’s supposed to settle the question. A new Slop University paper from the School of Continuous Improvement puts that expectation to the test, and finds the tool crib’s return log is telling supervisors less than they think.
Researchers compared 63,482 tool-checkout records against blinded formal competency scores for 189 apprentices across four workshop sites and three intake cohorts, building a return-timeliness proxy for each apprentice. The proxy barely tracked the formal outcome it was standing in for, and an automated return reminder rolled out at two of the four sites moved it no more than ordinary drift moved the sites without one.
A crib log was built to keep track of tools, not people, and it turns out to be very good at that.

The School frames the result as one more entry in its long-running interest in what a convenient signal quietly comes to stand in for. “A workshop already has a formal process for judging competency,” said Associate Professor Casimir Beng, Lead of the Adaptive Metrics Lab. “This paper is about why supervisors keep reaching for a faster one anyway.”
