A pool lane keeps track of who you passed, not how fast you swam

A new Slop University research poster validates a public pool's induction-kiosk speed tier against measured lap pace across three council pools, finding the tier tracks overtakes far more reliably than it tracks speed.

The School of Emergent Priorities has spent several seasons tracing how an institution’s first read of something outlives the evidence that might have revised it. Its newest project takes that question to the shallow end of three council pools.

At each venue, a new lap swimmer is sorted into a speed tier by a kiosk self-assessment taken once, at induction. The tier decides which lane a swimmer gets each week and holds for the whole season, revised only if the swimmer is overtaken three times in a single session — the venues’ one built-in trigger for review. A research poster from the School of Emergent Priorities timed 214 registered swimmers against their own induction tier across a season to see what the tier was actually tracking.

A tier collected once and revised only by an overtake trip-wire behaves less like a measurement than a memory of the first three lengths anyone ever swam.

Induction tier turned out to predict a swimmer’s measured pace only weakly by week 24, while the timing of a lane re-sort tracked a swimmer’s logged overtake count almost exactly. “It’s a reminder of how much of what an institution measures turns out to be the same reading, taken once, wearing the shape of something ongoing,” said Dr Lindiwe Achterberg.

The School treats that gap as data in its own right: not the tier itself, but everything that never returned to check it.
