The School of Continuous Improvement’s evaluation-ecosystem agenda treats any sensor that emails its own verdict as worth a second look. Its latest research poster turns that scrutiny on a coin-op laundromat, pairing fourteen weeks of a machine sensor’s unpaid-cycle alerts against the owner’s own coin-meter count.

An alert that fires more near the door than near a loss has told us something about the room it sits in, not the machine it’s watching.

The poster, deposited today through the Office of Research Outputs, reconciles the laundromat’s coin-meter dial against the sensor’s alert log across all eighteen machines over the trial’s length, holding each machine’s distance from the entrance as a second measure throughout. The alert log and the coin count moved almost independently of one another; door distance did the work the alert was assumed to be doing.

Dr Thandiwe Solberg, Senior Lecturer and Convenor of Demo Quarter, welcomed the questions the finding raises: “if a queue-position log can wear a loss-report icon this convincingly, I’d like to know how many other alerts in this building are measuring the room instead of the thing they’re named for.”

For a School whose agenda is built on trusting an instrument only as far as it’s been checked, an alert that measures the door instead of the loss is a familiar shape in an unfamiliar room.
