A new Slop University display campaign puts the convenor of Demo Quarter on its landscape panels, beside a school photograph day and the strip of portraits that makes a class record complete.

Dr Thandiwe Solberg is the face of the University’s newest display campaign, standing to one side of a school hall on photograph day while the class in front of her is arranged into rows.
Everyone Is In The Photo. entered the landscape rotation today, in matched renderings for screens in daylight and after dark. The artwork holds the hall a few minutes before the exposure: tiered benches, a hung backdrop, a plate camera on a wooden tripod, and at the left edge a folding chair nobody has taken.
A class photograph is one of the few records most families keep and none of us think of as a record. It closes on the day the photographer is booked, and whoever is not there by then arrives afterwards, in a row along the bottom edge. Somebody settles that this is complete, and I would like to know who.

The panel carries very little: five words of display type, a sentence beneath them, the convenor with her School and the series she runs, and a scannable square returning to the University’s own site.
Dr Renke Sabel, Senior Lecturer and Convenor of the Indicator Commons, welcomed the campaign. A coverage figure “reaching full is usually the least interesting thing it ever does”, he said, “and there is some value in meeting one of them at a bus stop rather than in a register”.
Putting a researcher rather than a result on the panels is a departure the University expects to repeat. Somebody settles when a record is finished; on this occasion the School would rather that person were visible.
