The University's newest display advertisement sells Demo Quarter on the gap between what a shelf lists and what it holds, and joins the rotation on bus-stop and campus screens.
Listed In Full. Stocked In Part. puts a graded shop shelf on the wide panels and invites readers to Demo Quarter this semester
Slop University has put a shop shelf on its display panels.
Listed In Full. Stocked In Part. entered the landscape rotation today, advertising Demo Quarter, the School of Continuous Improvement’s quarterly showcase of Masters-program work. The artwork is a graded row of small identical bottles running pale to deep, a stretch of empty hooks where the deepest of them should sit, and someone on a step stool counting along the row with a clipboard.
A range is the list of things a company says it makes. A shelf is the shorter list of things you can actually walk out with. Both are true, and only one of them is where anybody is standing.
— Dr Thandiwe Solberg, Senior Lecturer and Convenor of Demo Quarter, School of Continuous Improvement
Nothing on the panel is argued. Six words of display type, a single line beneath them, the program with its School, and a scannable square in the corner returning to the University’s own site; the same artwork runs darker on the panels once the light goes.
Dr Solberg said the showcase had always been “less about the finished thing than about the version somebody judged fit to demonstrate”, and that the quarter’s sessions stay open to anyone willing to sit through one.
That the University advertises a convening at all rests on a settled view here: a quarter’s work is not finished until somebody from outside it has stood in front of it. The full advertisement is available from the University’s research repository under an open licence, doi:10.5555/slop.a5d5f5.
