University makes the four hour arrival window its research programme

Slop University has published a research-showcase brochure setting out its programme on the promised arrival window, and the morning it commits on the other side.

A new brochure gathers four published studies of services that report on the time they promised rather than the time somebody spent waiting for it

Somebody has to be in when the van comes. Slop University has decided that is a research question, and has published a brochure saying so.

Between Eight and Twelve, released today, gathers four of the University’s recent studies under a single campaign: the promised window, and the waiting it commits on the side nobody records. Its argument is that a service standard almost always scores whether the window was met, and almost never asks what holding it open cost the household on the other end.

There is nothing wrong with being told four hours instead of nothing. What we would like to add to the record is the other half of the arrangement, because at the moment only one party’s undertaking is written down anywhere.

The brochure sets the reported figure beside the recomputed one for three of the studies it features: river crossings assessed for punctuality against a timetable three of them adopted for the purpose, learn-to-swim lists whose published wait shortens as families leave them, and dental recall rates whose window restarts each time a patient defers. In each the two readings are drawn from the same records.

“The second reading is the contribution,” said Dr Marit Osayande, Lecturer and Convenor of the Living Dashboard in the School of Continuous Improvement. “We would like it to become the ordinary thing an institution asks for, rather than something a University has to come along afterwards and supply.”

The brochure also sets out the coursework pathways through which the University teaches the approach, anchored by the Master of Applied Measurement and the Capability Sprints program.
