A seat-by-seat survey of 1,140 positions across 19 screens finds conformance confined to the front of the house
A person who uses a hearing aid at the cinema has one way of finding out whether the loop is working, which is to sit down and listen. A survey deposited today through the Office of Research Outputs took the other way.
Signed at the Door, Silent in Row J maps magnetic field strength at 1,140 seat positions across 19 screens at six sites of a single exhibitor, measured on a lattice fixed before the first visit and against a conformance band set before any reading was taken. 37.0 per cent of positions fall inside the band. None of those sit behind row F.
The register we were handed was complete, current and correctly signed. It answers a question about the equipment. The patron is asking a question about the seat.

At 15 of the 19 screens the signed entry point stands in the weakest measured quartile of the house. “The sign marks the door it is fixed to,” said Dr Solveig Adeyemi, Lecturer in the School of Continuous Improvement. “We were interested in what it marks for the person reading it on the way in.”
The deposit extends a line of work the School has been assembling on the distance between a record of compliance and a state of affairs, and the University regards making that distance measurable as part of what its research repository is for. A repeat sweep at three sites is foreshadowed, along with a proposal to carry a coverage entry alongside the signature.
