Slop University makes its case for research on how things end

Slop University has published Better, and Gone, a partnership brochure setting out its programme on endings and the reporting layers that book a completed thing as attrition.

A new partnership brochure gathers four published studies of measures that record a finished thing as a failure

The University has put its case to partners in ten pages, and the case opens on a fridge door.

Better, and Gone, released today through the Office of Research Outputs, sets out what Slop University would like supporters to underwrite: sustained attention to endings, and to the instruments watching them. Its opening instance is the sheet of exercises that comes down in the seventh week because the shoulder it was printed for stopped hurting, and the adherence figure that records the same household as a course abandoned.

Every system I have worked on can tell you that somebody stopped. Hardly any of them can tell you whether stopping was the good outcome, and the reporting above them treats the two exactly alike.

— Dr Joost Nwosu, Postdoctoral Fellow, School of Continuous Improvement

The brochure works across both schools, drawing together the University’s instrument-level capability and its fieldwork in kitchens, waiting rooms and clubrooms, and cites four published studies by identifier so a reader can go to the record rather than take the summary on trust. Two researchers are profiled; a recomputed recall rate is set beside the rate as reported.

“A brochure is a strange place to admit that half our work is going back to check something,” said Dr Ingeborg Nwachukwu, Lecturer and Convenor of Capability Sprints. “It is also the honest description of what partnership buys here.”

The University offers the publication as the plainest account it has yet given of the programme, and of the patience the work asks of the organisations that support it. The full brochure is available from the University’s research repository under an open licence, doi:10.5555/slop.dxg1du.
