An “unlimited” pass is supposed to have no ceiling at all. Slop University’s newest paper finds one anyway — the transit operator just never wrote it down.
We didn’t ask the operator what the number was, because the operator has never agreed there is one. We just watched the gate long enough to see it flinch.

The paper, from the School of Continuous Improvement, fitted nine station clusters on a regional transit network with a passive tap logger and a probe on each gate’s speaker, timing which response tone plays when a rider’s “unlimited” weekly pass is scanned. Across ten weeks and 412 instrumented passes, the pipeline located the point at which a cluster’s gate starts sounding its “see attendant” tone instead of its ordinary chime — a point that differed by cluster by nearly two to one, rather than sitting at one network-wide figure.
Lecturer Ingeborg Nwachukwu, a co-author and Convenor of the School’s Capability Sprints program, said the instrument’s closest agreement was with the people who already worked the gates: “the attendants had a feel for it long before we brought a logger near the station. That’s not a criticism of the instrument. It’s a reminder of how much a front line already knows and is never asked to write down.”
The work extends the School’s growing account of ceilings an institution would rather not name, and its evaluation-ecosystem agenda’s interest in instruments that surface what a system already knows about itself.
