A new Slop University advertising campaign turns a fun run's blank finisher certificate into the next case before Improvement Grand Rounds, the School of Continuous Improvement's standing review seminar, running across the University's digital signage network this spring.
The School of Continuous Improvement's standing case-review seminar takes up a fun run's unpersonalised finisher certificate this spring
Somewhere between the printer and the podium, a fun run’s finisher certificates picked up a blank line where a name should have gone — and Improvement Grand Rounds, the School of Continuous Improvement’s standing case-review seminar, has claimed it for this spring’s docket.
The advertisement, titled “The Blank Line Made Grand Rounds,” stages the handover itself: a volunteer passing a certificate across the table before the results file has caught up with the printer, the runner’s name still queued rather than filled in. It joins the University’s bus-stop panels and campus digital signage this week, in matched daylight and evening renderings.
A blank field is a more honest failure than a wrong one — it doesn’t pretend to have finished the job. That’s usually enough to get it onto our agenda ahead of something that merely looks tidy.
— Dr Bram Ntuli, Lecturer and Convenor, Improvement Grand Rounds, School of Continuous Improvement
Grand Rounds situates the case within the School’s wider evaluation-ecosystem agenda, treating the printer’s output and the results file’s own timing as two systems assumed, rather than confirmed, to be in step. The seminar format becomes as much the point as the certificate itself: which failures earn a presenter’s slot, and which are quietly absorbed before anyone logs them.
Dr Osei Vandermeer, Research Fellow and Convenor of the Review Cadence Observatory, said the case arrived on an enviable timeline. “Most items wait considerably longer than a season for a slot on the docket,” he said. “A blank line moved rather more quickly than that.”
The University counts the seminar’s willingness to sit with a small failure among its more durable institutional habits. The full advertisement is available from the University’s research repository under an open licence, doi:10.5555/slop.zz6nsa.
