The School of Continuous Improvement has spent several years cataloguing which of an institution’s smallest instruments still mean what they once did. Its newest recruitment campaign puts one directly in the shot: the laminated sign-off sticker fixed to the tea-room microwave, present on the door for longer than anyone currently on staff can account for.
Unveiled today ahead of this spring’s Demo Quarter, the artwork sets the microwave beneath a crowded noticeboard, its sticker still catching the light, under the line “The Signature Retired. The Sticker Didn’t.” It runs across the University’s bus-stop panels and campus digital screens in matched daylight and evening renderings built to hold their legibility after dark.

Demo Quarter, the School’s quarterly Masters-program showcase, exists to put a project in front of an audience under exactly the kind of scrutiny a laminated sticker never gets a second time. The campaign borrows the same standard for its own casting call: an object everyone recognises, still trading on an approval nobody currently present actually gave.
“A showcase slot is supposed to be earned every quarter,” said Dr Thandiwe Solberg, Senior Lecturer and Convenor, Demo Quarter. “The microwave’s sticker did it once, in a year nobody’s checked, and has been coasting on the paperwork ever since.”
