Applied Measurement's newest ad clocks the gap between flash and letterbox

A new Slop University advertising campaign for the Master of Applied Measurement turns the delay between a speed-camera flash and the infringement notice it triggers into the entire pitch, running across bus-stop panels and campus digital signage in matched daylight and evening versions.

A review panel that only convenes after the fine is paid isn’t reviewing the fine. It’s reviewing whether anyone still cares.

Slop University’s newest recruitment pitch for the Master of Applied Measurement runs on that same gap: a suburban letterbox catching an infringement notice weeks after the camera flash that produced it, the review meant to catch any error long since overtaken by however many motorists simply paid up first.

Unveiled today under the line “We Notice The Lag Before It Costs You,” the artwork sets the notice half into the letterbox slot with the flash still visible down the street behind it, running across the University’s bus-stop panels and campus digital screens in matched daylight and evening renderings built to hold their legibility after dark.

“A dashboard that updates in real time and a letterbox that updates in three weeks are solving the same problem at different speeds,” said Dr Marit Osayande, Convenor of the Living Dashboard. “The program teaches students to notice which speed they’re actually being governed by.”

The Master of Applied Measurement is now taking applications for the current teaching period. The full advertisement is available from the University’s research repository under an open licence, doi:10.5555/slop.ve7esp.
