Futures in Committee gets a campaign built on finishing your sentence

A new Slop University advertising campaign for the Futures in Committee seminar series stages a phone finishing a group-chat reply before its sender does, running across bus-stop panels and campus digital signage.

A new bus-stop and campus-screen pitch for the seminar series turns a group chat's self-completing reply into the whole argument for showing up

Futures in Committee, the School of Emergent Priorities’ seminar series on how foresight talk becomes committee business, has a new campaign making the case for turning up before the case gets made without you.

The room likes to think it’s still deciding. Half the time it’s watching the sentence it already started finish itself.

— Dr Ingrid Vasseur, Lecturer and Convenor, Futures in Committee

Unveiled today under the line “We Finish The Sentence Before You Do,” the artwork sets a phone mid-reply on a crowded meeting table, its screen answering itself before anyone has spoken, while behind it a motion sheet on an easel already carries a full page of wording no one in the room has proposed yet. It runs on the University’s bus-stop panels and campus screens, with a paired night rendering for after dark.

“A demonstration slot and a committee minute are cut from the same cloth,” said Dr Thandiwe Solberg, Senior Lecturer and Convenor of Demo Quarter. “Both get finished well before the audience arrives to watch them happen.”

Futures in Committee holds sessions across the current teaching period. The full advertisement is available from the University’s research repository under an open licence, doi:10.5555/slop.ldoad5.
