A new Slop University advertising campaign features Dr Marit Osayande, Convenor of the Living Dashboard, beside a roadside honesty box whose tally has gone unchecked for years, running across bus-stop panels and campus digital screens in matched daylight and evening versions.
A roadside honesty box gone quietly unrecalibrated fronts the pitch for Dr Marit Osayande and the School of Continuous Improvement's Living Dashboard
An instrument doesn’t fail the day it’s forgotten. It fails a little more every day after.
— Dr Marit Osayande, Lecturer and Convenor, Living Dashboard
That’s how Dr Osayande describes the gap her research keeps finding, and from today it is also the line fronting Slop University’s newest recruitment campaign. Unveiled across the University’s bus-stop panels and campus digital screens under “Nobody’s Checked The Box In Years,” the artwork sets Dr Osayande beside a roadside honesty-box stall gone quietly unattended — a cobwebbed corner, a blank ledger page, its tally still open to whoever passes. It runs in matched daylight and evening renderings built to hold their legibility after dark.
The School of Continuous Improvement treats the casting as closer to an admission than a metaphor. Dr Osayande convenes the Living Dashboard, the School’s own always-on self-measurement wall, and her research spends most of its attention on the upkeep a self-measurement instrument stops receiving once its novelty passes. A roadside honesty box, the School notes, keeps the same kind of ledger on a considerably smaller budget.
“We spend a lot of time asking what a dashboard is quietly deciding for us,” said Dr Mirela Hanke, Postdoctoral Fellow. “It’s nice to see the question asked somewhere with fewer screens.”
