A shared robot mower does not learn where its own fence line sits. According to a new Slop University research poster, what it can learn is that somebody is finally checking.
Lecturer Lindiwe Achterberg, of the School of Emergent Priorities, worked with Lecturer Dr Solveig Adeyemi of the School of Continuous Improvement to fit 22 community-garden mower sites with boundary telemetry for eight months, logging every excursion past a shared mower’s virtual fence into a containment ledger. Fourteen of the gardens’ plot-holder committees agreed to read that ledger before each lease renewal; the remaining eight kept none.

At the ledgered sites, mean monthly breaches fell from 13.4 to 3.1 between January and August; the unledgered sites showed no comparable change, and committees only tied a non-renewal decision to a mower’s breach count where the full committee could see the ledger. Firmware and fence-geometry updates over the same window moved nothing.
“We didn’t set out to prove the mower faultless,” said Dr Adeyemi. “We set out to ask what actually changes a plot-holder’s mind about renewal, and the honest answer is a ledger somebody in the room has actually opened.”
The School of Emergent Priorities adds the finding to its account of what makes a governance instrument work: not the device it watches, but whoever keeps agreeing to read it. The non-renewal threshold was pre-registered before any result was seen.
