A parcel locker’s “held as long as you need” promise turns out to have a shelf life of its own. A new Slop University research poster puts a number on how quickly that promise erodes once the locker bank it lives in starts running out of room.
Senior Lecturer Dr Ronja Oyelaran and Lecturer Dr Iben Chikere, both of the School of Emergent Priorities, logged 1,842 hold events across six share houses over sixteen weeks, matching each backend slot reassignment against the status a resident’s own app displayed at the same moment. An occupancy threshold was fixed before the count began, at 85 per cent, with no adjustment once the results were in.
A badge is supposed to report the state of a locker. This one reports its state from several minutes ago, and the gap widens exactly when a resident most needs it to close.

Below roughly seventy per cent occupancy, a reserved slot stayed reserved for a predictable stretch regardless of demand. Past that point, the backend began reassigning slots within minutes, while the app’s own badge went on reading “held” for a median of six minutes longer, stretching past eleven once the bank passed ninety per cent full.
“The lag isn’t a fault the vendor forgot to patch,” said Dr Chikere. “It’s what a promise looks like once it has to be re-checked more often than the system checks on itself.”
The School of Emergent Priorities adds the finding to its running ledger of commitments that hold in principle and slip once conditions tighten around them.
