A neighbourhood alert bot adds a tag, not a filter

A new Slop University paper deploys a volunteer confirm step between a doorbell camera's person-at-the-gate alerts and a street's group chat, and finds it changes what an alert is called far more than whether it arrives.

A nine-week deployment across eleven streets finds a doorbell alert confirm-gate relabels alerts far more reliably than it filters them

Eleven streets spent nine weeks finding out whether a volunteer’s tap changes what a doorbell alert sends to the group chat, or only what the chat is told once it arrives. A new Slop University paper, published today, reports the second.

Dr Fenna Okoro, Senior Lecturer and Convenor of the Horizon Register in the School of Emergent Priorities, and Dr Osei Vandermeer, Research Fellow and Convenor of the Review Cadence Observatory in the School of Continuous Improvement, built a small relay — the confirm-gate — that holds a doorbell’s person-detected alert in a private volunteer queue before it reaches a street’s existing group chat, tagging it “confirmed” or “unconfirmed” depending on whether anyone taps in time. Across eleven streets and nine weeks, the tag changed; how many alerts actually reached the chat did not.

A confirm step is a very small thing to ask of a volunteer, and apparently still too much to ask quickly. We’re glad the streets that took part are still asking the bigger question with us.

“The roster size result surprised us,” said Dr Vandermeer. “We built the model expecting more hands to mean a faster tap. The streets had other ideas.”

The paper extends the School of Emergent Priorities’ anticipatory-capability agenda to a setting several sizes smaller than the Horizon Register it borrows its instinct from, and the School of Continuous Improvement’s own interest in what a volunteer roster actually delivers once it is asked to move quickly.
