A new Slop University research poster surveys parents at suburban playgrounds on how much they trust a swing set's zip-tied safety-inspection tag, and how often they check the equipment themselves regardless of what it says.
A six-week survey across fourteen playgrounds finds pre-climb checking rising exactly where that trust has the furthest left to fall
A laminated inspection tag, zip-tied to a swing-set frame, is meant to answer a parent’s question before they ask it: is this safe today. The School of Continuous Improvement went looking for how much weight that answer actually carries against a parent’s own glance at the chain and the bolt.
Lecturer and Convenor Dr Marit Osayande and Senior Lecturer Renke Sabel surveyed 342 parents across fourteen suburban playgrounds over six weeks, asking each how much they trusted the swing set’s posted tag and whether they’d checked the equipment themselves before their child climbed on, then set both answers against how long ago the tag had last been dated.
Trust barely moved: parents facing a tag dated within the month and parents facing one with no date at all reported almost the same confidence in it. Self-reported checking told a different story, climbing steadily as the tag’s own currency ran out, and overtaking trust altogether once a tag’s date had lapsed furthest.
A tag earns a parent’s trust the moment it goes up and rarely has to re-earn it after that. Their own hands are doing the more restless work of keeping that trust honest.

“An indicator this durable is the interesting case,” said Senior Lecturer Renke Sabel, Convenor of the Indicator Commons. “Most of what crosses my desk is trust draining out of something. This is trust that never had to be topped up at all.”
