A new paper finds a car-share return checklist verified in proportion to what a renter has at stake, with verification thinning further as a late-return fee deadline approaches.
A taxonomy of 1,842 returns finds verification depth tracks the renter's own stake, not the checklist's stated order, and thins out as the late fee's deadline closes in.
A car-share return checklist asks five questions every time a vehicle changes hands: fuel, exterior condition, cleanliness, the child seat, the toll tag. A new paper from the School of Emergent Priorities and the School of Continuous Improvement set out to learn which of those five questions renters actually looked at when answering, and which they answered from memory. Working from a fleet’s own screen-interaction logs rather than from renters’ say-so, the researchers built a four-level taxonomy of verification — measured, glanced-at, remembered, or skipped — and matched it against 1,842 returns.
The findings sit easily inside the University’s growing catalogue of instruments that keep a perfect record of something other than the thing they were built to record. Fuel level, easy to check and costly to miss, gets confirmed against the gauge in most returns. The toll transponder, whose absence turns up on a bill weeks later if it turns up at all, is mostly ticked from memory — and more so the closer a renter gets to the fee that’s trying to hurry them along.

A photo-capture step the fleet introduced for the transponder field bore that out: it lifted verification comfortably outside the fee window and did almost nothing inside it. “The step still gets performed,” said Associate Professor Casimir Beng, Lead of the Adaptive Metrics Lab. “What changes is whether anyone’s looking at what the photo shows.”
