Slower sorting shift halves a charity shop's shop-floor fault rate

A new research poster from the School of Emergent Priorities trials a lower-quota donation-sorting roster across three charity shops, finding it roughly halves the shop-floor fault rate at the cost of a slower processing tally.

Dr Lindiwe Achterberg and Dr Mirela Hanke piloted an extended-shift, lower-quota roster at three charity shops over nine months, running it alongside each shop’s standard fast-throughput schedule and auditing forty items a week per shop against the sorting log. The piloted roster’s own tally fell 34 percent behind the standard schedule’s. The shop-floor fault rate it left behind told the opposite story, dropping from 11.4 percent to 6.2 percent across the same nine months.

The gap wasn’t even across what came through the door. Electricals carried the steepest fault difference of the four categories audited; books, barely sorted at all under either roster, carried the shallowest.

“A quota tells a volunteer how fast to go, never how carefully,” said Dr Mirela Hanke. “This is the first time we’ve had a number for what the second half of that instruction was costing.”

None of the three shops has adjusted its rostered quota since the trial closed. The School takes that less as a verdict on the finding than as a demonstration of how firmly a single number can anchor a roster once it’s the only one being watched.
