A new research poster from the School of Emergent Priorities interviews loading-dock staff and delivery couriers, finding the hand-signal protocol that actually sequences trucks at the roller door rarely matches what the advance-booking system forecasts.
A nine-week interview study of three loading bays finds the hand-signalled order rarely matches what the booking system predicts
Dock staff at Slop University say they can read a loading bay faster than the booking system can update it. A new research poster from the School of Emergent Priorities puts a number on how often they’re left to prove it.
Over nine weeks, researchers interviewed eighteen dock staff and sixteen couriers across three loading bays, then coded what each said against the roller door’s own hand signals and the advance-booking system’s published order for the same 41 shifts. Sequencing calls matched the system’s forecast in roughly a third of cases, a rate a mid-study notice-board upgrade — meant to make the forecast easier to read — left unchanged.
This project has taught the School something about its own habits of noticing: how much of what actually coordinates a place never makes it onto a form.

Professor Verity Marris, Director of the Trajectory Analytics Group, said the finding raises a question worth sitting with: “what a forecasting system might do differently if it were built to notice the wave instead of just the booking.”
Dr Ingrid Vasseur, who convenes the School’s Futures in Committee seminar series, called the hand-signal exchange “a scheduling system the dock built for itself, one wave at a time, without ever being asked to.”
For the School of Emergent Priorities, the study extends a running interest in what an institution’s tools miss once someone is standing close enough to see the gap themselves.
