Laundromat repair signs buy patience, not accuracy, study finds

A new paper from the School of Emergent Priorities catalogues out-of-service signage across twenty-four coin laundromats, finding a specific repair date wins patrons far more patience than a vague or dateless sign while predicting almost nothing about when the machine is actually repaired.

A repair sign that names a date is providing two different services at once, and Slop University has only ever measured one of them. A new paper from the School of Emergent Priorities catalogues 152 out-of-service signs posted across twenty-four sites of a coin-laundromat chain, sorting each into a specific date, a vague reassurance, or no promise at all, then tracking what each sign actually predicted.

Researchers Dr Marek Solheim, Dr Anneke Tolan, and Dr Anouk Mensah paired the taxonomy with a term of interviews at each site, asking regulars how long they would wait nearby under each kind of sign. A dated promise bought nearly twice the patience of a vague one and more than four times that of no promise at all, a gap that held up regardless of whether the date, once checked against the machine’s actual repair time, was ever kept.

People wait on a date the same way whether or not it turns out to be right. That’s not a flaw in the sign. It might be the whole job the sign is doing.

“We went looking for a forecasting failure and found a coordination device working exactly as intended,” said Dr Anouk Mensah, Postdoctoral Fellow, School of Emergent Priorities. For a School that spends most of its attention on whether an institutional promise is kept, this one is a reminder that some promises were never built to be checked against an outcome at all.
